Veterinary Behaviour Consults

Veterinary behaviour consults with our veterinary behaviourist Dr Katie Friel-Russell BVSc MAPDT PGDip CCAB MRCVS are available for both dogs and cats.

These are to diagnose and begin the treatment plan for emotionally driven behaviours, this is more in depth than just a simple training problem. As with all our training all work is science based and force-free.

All behaviour consults must have a veterinary referral as the majority of behavioural concerns have a medical influence. This also needs to be investigated and treated in order for the behavioural modification to be successful.

Behaviour consults can be claimed for on pet insurance if you have it.

“He has improved so much, not only in his response and confidence but in his specialised difficulties. So proud of him.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Please see our most frequently asked questions below. If you have any further questions please get in touch.

Behaviour consults are aimed at emotionally driven behaviours with symptoms such as:

Dogs; reactivity (aggression) towards people or other animals or traffic, separation related behaviours, guarding, noise sensitivity, generalised anxiety.

Cats; reactivity (aggression) towards people or other animals, inappropriate toileting, over grooming.

Yes if your policy covers for behaviour treatment we can claim through pet insurance.

If your pet is covered by PetPlan we can run a pre-authorisation where they can confirm before you’re seen whether you are covered or not.

With many policies we can claim direct so that you only need to pay us your excess at the time of the consult.

Behaviour consults are for more in-depth, emotionally driven behaviours. Whereas training is more focussed on teaching your dog a new behaviour.

Emotionally driven behaviours include struggling with interactions with people and other dogs, separation related problems, guarding issues and noise sensitivity.

Training issues include recall, lead walking, puppy training and jumping up.

Yes, an in-depth report will be emailed out following the consult.

For the dog behaviour consult you also have access to five hours of online video teaching too.

Emotionally driven behaviours cannot be changed over night, these take time and work but the work is often very short bursts and changes to everyday management.

Ideally all adults in the household would be present, it means everyone is working from the same page.

The consults are often boring for children so if they would prefer to not be present that is absolutely fine.

If work patterns make it difficult for all to be present we can, of course, do consults with only one family member and others will still be able to read the report and potentially catch up at any follow on appointments.
