Dogs and Babies
Are you pregnant and have a dog? Do you have young children and are thinking of getting a dog? Are you a trainer who sees clients who are either of the above?
Dr Katie Friel-Russell BVSc APDT PGDip MRCVS veterinary behaviourist, dog trainer and mother offers an in-depth seminar for a small group on dogs and babies. This seminar discussed the difficulties and miscommunications that often occur between children and dogs,
Bringing a new addition into the family (four legged or two) can be difficult for everyone. This can escalate to unmanageable levels of anxiety, fear and frustration and can results in injury, rehoming or even euthanasia.
The majority of dog bites are to children who know the dog. It is essential that children are introduced to dogs in a safe, controlled manner and that the relationship is nurtured as they grow together. Done correctly dogs and children can develop a fantastic friendship.
You will learn:
- Basic dog behaviour
- Pre-baby training requirements. What behaviours a dog need to learn, and how to teach them.
- Dog and baby proofing the house. How to maximise functionality and safety in any home
- Games for kids with dogs. How to encourage that bond safely and with lots of fun!
- When to get help – the signs to look for when things aren’t going well.
Dr Katie enjoys teaching small groups in a relaxed, informative style. With a keen interest in gentle parenting and as a mother herself the topic of dogs and babies is very close to her heart.
